  • Descrição: Good-natured but timid Alekos from Thessaloniki has been seeing Voula for a long time, but he cannot make up his mind to marry her. Her brother Grigoris threatens to kill him if he doesn't soon come up with a date for the wedding. But Alekos cannot do that because he is still financially dependent upon his father, and he must first marry off his little sister Anna. Anna already has a suitor, but he hasn't been informed of his nomination yet. It is Antonis Papapoulakis, whom Alekos met at the club where he often would go with Voula. At the club Alekos and Antonis talked about the old trick of promising marriage in order to go out with the girls. Alekos is astonished to hear that Antonis is his sister's suitor and tells his parents all about him. Antonis seizes this opportunity to deny Anna, on the grounds that her father won't provide her with a dowry. Similarly, Alekos cannot marry Voula, because his father demands a dowry from her family. But the cunning women, pretending that they intend to kill themselves, make the two grooms and their families reconsider their attitude and give their consent to their marriages - out of necessity.
